Our interview with Payton Bernstine, of Promise Event Planners
As part of our continued effort to seek out some of Colorado’s most talented wedding vendors, I recently interviewed a rising star in the world of event planning: Payton Bernstine. Payton is the owner and founder of Promise Event Planners located in Denver. She’s a Colorado native who loves working with “creative couples with a flair for funky details.”
I asked her a little about her services and most importantly, on what to look for when hiring a planner.
[Ryan] Can you tell us a little bit about Promise Event Planners? What makes your approach to event planning different?
[Payton] Well, I started wedding planning when I stumbled upon the internship of a lifetime while I studied at the University of Colorado! I went from an intern to a lead coordinator in six months and was planning events for two years after that. When I graduated I decided to take the leap and start my own planning company. We plan mostly weddings but also specialize in special events and parties! I have a very modern and minimalist style. Although I am a young planner, I think that makes me more in tune with trends and what is new in the wedding industry.
I would say one thing that really makes me different is that I believe in making my couples and their day personal and special. This sometimes means saying goodbye to silly traditions that don’t suit you. I will always give my couple traditional options, but based on their personalities I am able to figure out the things that will be best for them on their day.
You’ve clearly planned a lot of weddings to date, what was one that really stood out and why?
One wedding that really stands out to me is my couple Chelsea and Travis’s Fall wedding in Vail last year! The timing of their date was just perfect as all the aspen trees were changing to a bright yellow color! Their main color was Burgundy which made for a perfect contrast! It made for some stunning photos! That was so memorable because it was something I couldn’t control that just worked out perfectly!
When searching for an event planner, what are the most important qualities that a couple should be looking for?
The most important quality a couple should be looking for when hiring an event planner is personality and the planner’s design style. You spend so much time with your planner in the months leading up to an event. You want to make sure you all have a similar personality so everyone can be happy and stress free during this somewhat crazy time. I think design style is important as well! To have a very modern and minimalist design style, so I try to work with couples that have a similar vision for their day.
What’s something that the groom can do to help support the wedding planning process?
I love when our grooms get involved in the planning process! I find that dividing and conquering can be a really effective method and I suggest giving the groom two or three things to be completely responsible for. It really helps to have the guys tackle something they really like such as food or music and let them be responsible for finding the most fitting vendors in that category!
