What is the difference between bespoke and MTM suits?

Bespoke suits and made-to-measure (MTM) suits differ primarily in how the garment is designed, patterned, and fitted to the individual. While the terms are sometimes used interchangeably, they represent very different levels of customization.

What is a bespoke suit?

The difference between a bespoke suit, or custom, or made-to-measure (MTM), can vary. But generally speaking, here are the differences.

  • Bespoke: Defined as a garment built from scratch and it requires a unique pattern for every client. Some clothiers will define a bespoke garment as one requiring a specific number of fittings and production hours.
  • Made-to-Measure (MTM): Identified as modifying a pre-existing pattern to fit a client’s measurements, typically involving fewer fittings and a faster turnaround.
  • Custom: Nowadays, this term is used broadly and can describe simple style tweaks on standard fits to full bespoke garments.

At Bespoke Edge, our suits are made one at a time using unique patterns. We take our clients through 3 fittings to ensure that every body measurement and posture data point were carefully considered. A large part of the value that we provide is our level of service and skill in measuring.

Additionally, bespoke suits should also feature a full canvas construction and surgeon cuffs on the sleeves (working buttonholes). We are proud to say that both these features are inclusive in all of our suiting.

Those with specific body needs will also find value in investing in a bespoke suit. For example, let’s say you have a unique posture, or a deep shoulder slope, or maybe you are of a modest height, or very tall. A bespoke suit can accommodate all sizes. Whereas, MTM solutions will likely be more limited in capability.
